Meet the Manager: Ben_pz

In the Footstock Meet the Manager series, we profile some of the platform’s most active managers. Today’s manager under the spotlight is Footstock newcomer Ben_pz.

1) What is your name?

On Twitter I’m @Ben_pz2 and on the Official Footstock Slack Chat I go by Ben_pz.

2) How long have you been on Footstock, how did you hear about it and what is your Footstock-related background?

I made a £10 deposit on Friday, 31st of April to have a little play around with. A lot of people had been discussing Footstock in the Football Index community and I thought I’d give it a go. I had a couple of goes on the roulette games without any success and forgot about it till the Monday, at which point I actually spent some time figuring out how things worked and then went about trying to make some money.

I’ve been making money from gambling/investments my whole adult life. I seem to have a knack for it. I was a professional online poker player for most of my twenties. Then I moved over to matched betting and trading on the sports markets for a couple of years before hitting 30, realising I had absolutely no CV to fall back on, and making the boring but probably sensible decision of getting a real job! Still questioning that now though.

I’ve always been obsessed with football and love the statistical part of the game, so I have always really enjoyed fantasy football and wondered if I could at least make a semi-living out of it.

I started on Football Index almost exactly a year ago and have done quite well with that. I always wished I’d got on with it when I first heard about it years ago, but almost everyone probably feels that way. With Footstock, I feel like it’s still early days, which is very exciting.

3) What is your collection size?

After subtracting the value of my bonus player cards my collection size plus balance is currently around £1,300. I deposited £10 and nothing more yet. From the Monday when I really started putting time into it, it took me 11 days to get to the £1,000 mark.

4) What is your collection structure?

I must have every Common and Basic player there is! Generally, I only hold one of each player unless I see a lot of potential capital appreciation in them or buy multiples in those that I use regularly for roulette. I only have 11 cards that are three-star or above at the moment.

5) What is your strategy?

At the moment, lots and lots of roulette. I now play almost exclusively four-player one-star and two-star roulette. I dabbled with 8/16/32-player roulette but variance is a little large for my collection size, so I’m sticking to low stakes at the moment. Bankroll control is an important part of poker and I use the same method here. I’m finding the roulette games and poker have many things in common. Discipline being the most important one.

I seem to have found a winning strategy, which I will continue to use until it stops working. To put it simply, I just play the cards I see as the best value, rinse and repeat. Nothing more complicated than that. At first I watched what everyone else was doing and looked closely at what worked and what didn’t through trial and error.

It will be a new challenge when the football starts again and players stats change. I’m actually really looking forward to it, but have no idea if I will have the same success, so in case I don’t I plan to play a lot more roulette before that happens!

I have not had much chance to focus on anything else yet, but in the future I will be looking at the trading side a lot more. I see lots of opportunity there. Although I’m having fun seeing how far I can get my £10 deposit, I expect I will make a more sizable one soon. I am enjoying my current +10,000% ROI though!

6) What do you like about Footstock?

I see lots of potential avenues of making profit which is the thing I’m very excited about with Footstock. There is a combination of things which are driving player values. This gives it an interesting layer of complexity, which hopefully skilled traders should do well out of. For example, it helps the roulette games because if the prices were only based on a player’s ability in roulette then the games would be solved fairly quickly, but as there are many other factors driving prices this allows me to find potential value.

Footstock isn’t heavily reliant on football being played all the time, which is brilliant, especially in the current situation. There also seems to be very good liquidity, which I think is very important.

It feels like there is always something to be done. Time put in is really rewarded.

7) Which players do you presently think are the best value and why?

A bit of a tricky question for me as I have only been here a short amount of time.
There is a much bigger gap between the top and bottom end on the market on Footstock compared to Football Index, say. I could see those gaps closing as things move forward. I hope so anyway, as that would really suit me!

Also I expect the youth players to do extremely well. The fact that you could keep a certain player’s card throughout their career means that their value should be a lot higher than they are currently in my opinion. Also, everyone loves a youth prospect!

8) What advice would you give a new trader?

Take some time to see how things work before diving in too fast. I think some people probably join, don’t understand it at first, and give up. I was nearly one of those, but obviously now I’m glad I stuck at it. Also join the community on the Official Footstock Slack Chat or other forums. I find they are always the best places to learn.

Finally, being lucky helps! With hindsight I had plenty of luck at the beginning as I tried to work out the roulette games.

9) What has been your best/favourite roulette win or swap?

I remember early on I won an 8-man roulette with a Nathaniel Chalobah and got at least £50 worth of cards. Chalobah was about 40p at that time. That certainly sent me on my way, but really it’s largely been lots and lots of small wins.

I have had a bit of luck on the single roulette, winning De Bruyne, Richarlison and Saint-Maximin. That’s also helped!

10) What are you most looking forward to about Footstock?

I’ll be honest – I don’t have a clue! I’m still too new to really know what’s being lined up. I read something about other leagues happening eventually. This could be good for me as I have decent knowledge of foreign leagues from my time spent on Football Index.

I’m just happy to be involved with something that’s so good, with so much potential, that’s still at such an early stage.
